Materials:

Book: “Every Day Leadership” by Mariam G. MacGregor

Objectives:

  • To encourage each student to uncover his/her own leadership potential through participation in reading materials, homework and in class assignments, journaling, participation in class discussion and exploration of their unique ambitions .

  • Provide leadership opportunities within the school and in the community which will allow for students to engage in their community, embrace initiative, show responsibility, demonstrate organization and ultimately take on the role of leadership.

  • Participate in and organize school activities, fundraisers and drive school spirit through leading events, showing good moral and attending assigned responsibilities.

  • Learn and apply the leadership tools necessary to organize and be accountable for activities including, basic excel sheets, assignment charts, check lists, calendaring and budgeting.

Grading:

This outline is intended to give you a general idea of what to expect during the semester. There will be more detailed expectations given for each assignment as the due dates approach. Each Category is weighted with 1/3 of the overall course grade.

Personal Leadership Development: 1/3

  • Every Day Leadership (5 points each- 105 total): There are 21 sections of Every Day Leadership which will be covered throughout the semester. Please see the calendar and website for due dates.

  • Weekly Quiz (5 points each-50 total): There will be a brief, 10 question quiz each Friday which will cover the material from readings, class lectures, class discussions, and online resources for that week. It may also include important information from previous weeks as a review.

  • Participation (3 points daily-285 total): Points for participation are earned based on completion of in class assignments, appropriate behavior, contributing to discussions, being a team player, having a positive attitude, and ultimately showing qualities of a leader during the class period.

Community Service: 1/3

  • Community Service A (100 points): An in school service project which will benefit the community. It is to be chosen and planned by the leadership class as a whole. This is a group assignment which involves participation during class periods, homework completion and time after school/during lunch.

  • Community Service B (200 points): An out of school service project which should be planned to incorporate the entire student body of Alpine Academy. Leadership students will be in charge of selecting and planning this project within the community. It is expected that they promote this event to the student body and achieve high attendance at this event. This requires time within the class as well as time outside of the classroom to fulfill small group responsibilities.

  • Community Service C (100 points): A leadership class service project which allows for the class to go into the community and fulfill a need. This will be chosen, planned and attended by all leadership students. This will be primarily planned during class time with minimal independent work.  

  • Community Service in Class (25): There are opportunities presented during class to participate in community service which takes minimal to no planning only attendance and a positive attitude.

School Engagement Assignments: 1/3

  • Assemblies (25 points each – 75 total): There are three assemblies throughout the school year and it is expect that each student attend them. Additionally it is expected that each student participate in the planning and execution of each assembly. While leading the assemblies it is important that each student utilizes the leadership techniques which they have learned and not only show up but create a positive and energetic atmosphere for the school.

  • Prom (200 points): Prom will be held towards the end of April and it is expected that each student participate in the planning, organization and carry through of each responsibility. It is also expected that each student attends prom and is available to help prior to and during the event.

  • One Dance (50 points): It is expected that each student assists in planning, advertising for, and set up of this dance. This will require participation outside of the normal class period. Preparations will be completed as a leadership group with delegation of certain assignments. 

  • Fundraisers (varied points- around 100): It is expected that all leadership students participate in raising money for the school. The type and number of fundraisers will be determined by the leadership class. Participation in fundraisers will be graded and assigned points based on the level of initiative taken, attendance, effort and the resulting money raised.

Contributing to All Three Categories: Evenly Distributed

  • Home Work Assignments (varied points-around 300): These assignments will be posted on the website two week prior to their due date. No assignment is intended to exceed one hour in length. The categories of these assignments will correspond to the topics covered during class and will complement the learning materials.  (Expect: 5 in regards to community service, 5 for Personal Development and 5 for School Engagement)

  • Mid Term Exam (50 points): The midterm is a written exam which will incorporate cumulative topics from leadership. Questions will be multiple choice, true/false, matching and reflective responses. The material covered will be from all aspects of learning including in class discussion, online materials, homework assignments, interpretations (your student’s personal interpretation on quotes or ideas), and any readings. Since this is very well rounded students will receive a study guide prior to the exam. 

  • Mid Term Presentation (50 points): This presentation will be 2 minutes in length and each student may select their own topic which incorporates leadership.

  • Final Exam (100 points): This exam is very similar to the midterm in format and the location of material tested on. It is cumulative and covers material from the entire semester.

  • Final Presentation (50 points): This is a five minute presentation about your experience in leadership and how you have grown.

 

Website:

This class has information which will be exclusively provided on the website. It is thus crucial to check this site frequently for updates on assignments and supplementary information. It is my responsibility to keep this website updated and the students’ full responsibility to check it daily.

Homework:

This class requires at home preparation to maximize learning while in the classroom. It is expected that all reading/video assignments are completed prior to class to increase your ability to contribute to productive discussion and participation in activities where we apply these principles.

There is minimal tolerance for homework which is not turned in. Missed work may be turned in no later than the school day following the missed due date accompanied by a 25% grade reduction. (Example: if you miss an assignment due on Friday you must turn it in the following Monday)

Leaders should strive to be organized and responsible for their homework and the policy above is to hold each student fully accountable. Should severe circumstance make it impossible to meet a deadline, please contact me for accommodations.  

Plagiarism:

Integrity is highly valued at Alpine Academy and thus there is a zero tolerance for any plagiarized work. All quotes which are not your own must be properly cited or disciplinary consequences will follow.

Additionally it is crucial to give credit where credit is due. During group assignments it is expected that you only take credit for your own contribute and show integrity while reporting on your team member’s effort. Failure to be honest in this aspect is considered deceitful and will receive disciplinary action.

Class Room Ethics:

It is expected that each student knows and upholds every rule outlined by Alpine Academy’s student handbook. Students in leadership are held to the highest of standards at all times. This includes behavior within the class room, while on service projects/field trips, and interactions with their peers.

It is crucial to maintain a classroom of order and respect to produce effective strides in leadership training and achieve our school and community goals.

Please note that there is a zero tolerance policy for the following behaviors and violation of such will lead to disciplinary action.

  1. Bad Language (as defined by Alpine Academy)

  2. Disrespectful Comments (We strive to build an encouraging atmosphere)

  3. Disrupting instruction ( talking out of turn, speaking over the instructor, not staying on task)

  4. Obey all rules outlined by the Alpine Academy Handbook

  5. This list is not exclusive and students should remember that good leaders strive to uphold the highest of standards at all times and in all places.

  2. Showing a respect for learning, others and yourself

  3. Taking Initiative

  4. Accepting leadership opportunities

  5. Being responsible and accountable for your assignments and actions

  6. Showing a positivity attitude!!!!!
