Chapter #1

Notes: 

  1. The Health Continuum: understand that health is dynamic (always changing) and that your behaviors impact the direction you move on the health  continuum (toward Illness or Wellness). 

  2. Differentiate between three aspects of health (physical, mental and social health). Give an example and definition for each.

  3. Know the 8 influences on health: heredity, physical environment, social environment, culture, media, technology, healthcare, behavior. Know the definition of each and give an example of a risk factor

  4. Being a wise health consumer: know your rights and examples of fraud (quackery)

Monday:

Turn in: Notes on section 1

Vocabulary:

  1. Life expectancy: the number of years one is expected to live

  2. Quality of Life: the degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life.

  3. Physical Health: refers to how well your body functions

  4. Mental Health: refers to how you react to events in your life and is the state of being comfortable with yourself, with others and with your surroundings.

  5. Social health: refers to how well you get along with others.

 

Tuesday:

 

Turn in: Notes on section 2

Vocabulary:

  1. Risk factor: is any action or condition that increases the likelihood of injury, disease or other negative outcomes.

  2. Short-term goals and long-term goals: be able to give an example

Healthy 2020 Goals:

  1. Increase the quality and years of healthy life

  2. Eliminate differences in health based on race, ethnic group or income

  3. Create social and physical environments that promote good health

  4. Promote healthy behaviors, health development and quality of life across all life stages.

Wednesday:

Turn in: a 2min presentation on one of the skills below and present it to the class.

  4. Making decisions

  5. Setting goals

  6. Practicing healthful behaviors

  7. Advocacy

 

Thursday:

Turn in: A sample of the DECIDE process with connection to your life. If absent complete the section review.
