Healthy food decisions and weight management
Notes:
Hunger: a feeling of physical discomfort that is caused by your body's need for nutrients.
Appetite: a desire for food that is based on emotions and other factors rather than nutritional need.

During this class we made a list on the board of things that can impact appetite such as...being board, feelings of sadness/depression/anxiety, mindless eating, seeing food, smelling food, advertisements... there are many more options
​
Things which impact your choice of food include the following: Be able to identify how each can impact food selection.

Evaluating Food Choices to best satisfy HUNGER:

Read food label

watch nutrient and health claims

Observe daily values

Respect expiration dates.

Note the number of servings per container

Note the number of calories per serving

Look at the percentages of Daily Value

Look for any health or nutrient claims

Safe Weight Management

Vocabulary:

Body Composition: the ratio of fat to lean tissue in the body(muscle/bone)​

Body Mass Index: a ratio of your weight to your height- this is the number we calculated during class which is compared to the charts to identify underweight/average or overweight.

Overweight: person who is heavier than the standard for the person's height
-
Obesity: Having a BMI over 30

Underweight: describes a person who is lighter than the standard for the person's height

Dangerous Diet Plans

Fad Diet: a popular diet that has no scientific evidence to support it's claims.

Diet Aids: pills which claim to help loose weight

Fasting: going without food
Sensible Weight Loss:

recognizing eating patterns

plan healthful strategies

exercise
Sensible Weight Gain:

Avoiding snack

Choose nutrient rich snacks

don't increase your fat or sugar intake

try not to skip meals

at mealtime, take bigger helpings

while increasing your caloric intake do not neglect exercise
